WHY MOST PLUMBERS UNDERCHARGE
The most common mistake is targeting a take-home figure and forgetting tax and NI. To take home £40,000, you need to earn around £50,000 gross profit — that's before any overheads. Add £9,000 in annual business costs and you need to turn over nearly £60,000, divided across roughly 165 chargeable days.
THE CHARGEABLE DAY
Not every working day is billable. Quoting, admin, warranty callbacks, supplier runs, training — they all eat into your chargeable time. Most tradespeople are 75–85% chargeable. If you assume 100% and price accordingly, you're working 20+ days a year for free.
MATERIALS MARKUP
This calculator covers your time only. Materials are a separate line on every quote — add 15–25% markup on top of trade prices to cover running to the merchant, returns, and warranty. That margin is legitimate profit, not greed. Include it in every fixed-price job.
FOR PLUMBERS & HEATING ENGINEERS
You've got the rate.
Now make sure people can find you.
Knowing your numbers is step one. Step two is making sure the homeowners searching for a plumber in your area find you — not your competitors. A website that ranks locally turns Google searches into booked jobs, without Checkatrade taking a cut.
